Hans reads that his current router has a dangerous vulnerability in the Realtek chipset. Therefore, he decide to replace the 9-year old router with a new modern one.

The router is on sale at Kjell & Company and costs 1490 SEK instead of 1990 SEK.

Good

  • Easy to set-up also in advanced mode.
  • Quite small.

Bad

  • Nothing.

Update wireless adapter driver

An instruction Advanced Wi-Fi Helper Tip is included in the package. It describes how to update the Windows driver for Intel adapters to version 20.70.0. But after checking the version Hans does not need to update. His computer is continously updated with new drivers.

September 2012

A new offer is released by Bredbandsbolaget. The first 2 months is free of charge if upgrading from 10 to 100. Considering the price difference of 80 SEK and the faster upload speed, this is a sensible offer. To be able to store data in the cloud for backup, a higher upload speed would be more convenient.

320 SEK/month

Hans uses the Media computer with WLAN connection up to March 21 when he discovers that the surf speed is increased significantly by connection the computer via a LAN-cable.

Good

  • Large improvement in speed for an acceptable cost.

Bad

  • Nothing.

2012-10-03: Speed check

Hans checks the internet connection using Bredbandskollen. The connection is provided by Bredbandsbolaget.

The test is made with his computer connected via wireless LAN in the apartment.

July 2012

The wire broadband in the flat requires a wireless router in order to be able to use several computers. This one is IPv6 proof and has a USB port for sharing data.

Good

  • Small unit that can be places on a shelf in the hallway.
  • Good administration interface.

Bad

  • Gets a little bit hot, wrinkling the shelf after 9 years of operation.
  • Year 2021 a vulnerability in the software is discovered.

End of life 2021-08-25

Hans reads about a dangerous vulnerability in Realtek chipsets used in devices from many vendors. The DIR-825 is mentioned in the list of vulnerable devices

He disconnects the router and leave if for recycling. It is replaced by the Asus RT-AX58U.

It is probably a good idea anyway to get a new router with the latest functions, after using this router for 9 years.

July 2012

Hans moves to a new apartment with an RJ45 broadband connection supplied by Bredbandsbolaget. After one week of free trial, there is no question about it. Even though the theoretical top speed is just slightly higher than the mobile broadband, the surfing experience is much more pleasant, probably due to the delay caused by radio networks in mobile connections.

239 SEK/month

Good

  • Simple connection through cable network.
  • Pleasant surfing experience.

Bad

  • Nothing really, but a wireless router must be installed.

July 2010

In July 2010 Hans has the following internet access subscriptions:

  • Dial-up modem 56 kbit/s from any telephone number (Telia Internet) 25 SEK/month
  • Tele2 Mobile Connect, up to 384 kbit/s, 99 SEK/month

The Tele2 connection is a little bit slow considering all large files handled for different web sites and email. An upgrade is necessary to be prepared for the next few years. Hans wants to keep the old email address trebla@telia.com connected to Telia Internet, so he chooses a Mobile Broadband from Telia, even though the corresponding Tele2 version is cheaper.

Cost for current connection up to 0.3 Mbit/s: 124 SEK/month Cost for the new connection up to 6 Mbit/s: 196 SEK/month (considering special 99 SEK/month the first 6 months) The new subscription has a binding time of 24 months.

Good

  • Fast.
  • Nice user interface.

Bad

  • Slow, only 237 kbit/s, when connected through Edge.
  • The modem USB stick is so small that it can be lost.

October 2007

To get a faster internet connection an ADSL modem is the natural choice. But in 2007 Tele 2 releases the 3G mobile internet connection at a reasonable price (SEK 99 per month). This is a good replacement of the dial-up modem.

Good

  • Flexible, works with any computer, installation software is built in.
  • Fast connection for only 99 SEK/month.

Bad

  • Requires at least 600 pixels height on computer, cannot be run on the HP netbook.
  • Sometimes the network is temporarily down or slow.

Hans uses his computer in several locations and thereby he wants a more flexible access. Telia now offers a toll-free number subscription. With this access Hans dials the same 020-number from any fixed telephone line, wherever he is.

The connection is also successfully used from Hans' palm computer Palm Vx, connecting with Telnet to technical systems in other parts of the world.

Good

  • Can be used from any fixed telephone line.
  • Can be used from any computer.
